Like all modern engines with overhead camshafts, many of Subaru’s Boxer engines rely on timing belts to drive not just the camshaft and valves, but also the water pump. The timing belt itself also ensures that the engine’s intake and exhaust valves open and close at the correct moments. Since most Subaru engines are built with very close tolerances for greater efficiency, it’s important to have your timing belt changed at the proper service intervals. Scott recommends that Subaru owners check and, if necessary, replace their timing belts at least every 60,000 miles. Some Subaru models require timing belt checks at 100,000 miles.

Unfortunately, any sort of delay when it comes to servicing your timing belt will have disastrous consequences for both your engine and your wallet. The majority of Subaru engines are “interference engines,” meaning that the various valvetrain components and other internal parts will collide with one another without the proper timing. If your timing belt breaks, “skips” or otherwise fails, it could result in thousands of dollars in damage to your engine’s internal components. It’s not uncommon to see a timing belt failure result in an open exhaust valve punching its way through a cylinder piston, leaving behind extraordinary amounts of damage in its wake.

Changing the timing belt yourself is possible, but it’s not a fool’s errand. The various timing gears must be positioned just so in order to stay in sync, otherwise the intake and exhaust valves will collide with the cylinder pistons.
